Whiter Teeth = Brighter Smiles + Confidence
Do you have stained teeth that make you feel self-conscious about smiling?
Whitening is for people who suffer from teeth stained by food, drink – mainly red wine, coffee and tea – and tobacco. Teeth whitening can significantly lighten the colour of your teeth and enhance your smile by using a dental whitening agent. It’s a safe way to brighten up your smile and does not remove any natural tooth material.
Whitening only works on natural teeth: it will not change the colour of existing toot coloured fillings, porcelain crowns, veneers, bridges or denture teeth – these may need to be replaced to ensure good shade matching.

TAKE HOME
A tooth whitening gel is placed by yourself, in a tray that is custom made to fit over the teeth like a very thin gum shield. The tray containing the gel is worn for a period of 2-3hours once a day for 7-12days. This involves 2-3 visits:
- Visit 1 – We take impressions to construct a quality bespoke tooth whitening tray(s) to fit around your teeth
- Visit 2 – We fit the tray(s), take photos and your shade before treatment, and give you the gel with specific instructions on the do’s and don’ts.
- Visit 3 – We usually review you approximately 2 weeks later to take your new shade.
IN SURGERY
Chair-side tooth whitening is done using stronger whitening gel and activated light, in one visit usually lasting 60-90mins. This is useful if you need to whiten quickly, and we usually accompany this with a take home kit to ensure a longer lasting result.
Having regular hygiene cleans can also help you achieve a brighter, wonderfully clean smile.
Firstly, a special tooth bleaching gel containing carbamide peroxide is applied to your teeth. This chemical adheres to any stains on the enamel surface of your teeth and removes them. During the procedure a special covering is used to protect your gums. If you experience any irritation this will disappear within a few hours of treatment
The results can last anything from a few months to up to three years, but this will vary depending on the individual and your lifestyle choices. If you smoke or drink red wine, tea or coffee – which all can stain your teeth - the whitening effect won’t last as long. However, there is an option to use home teeth whitening kits which can help to maintain the effect.
Overall, the teeth whitening process is regarded as a very safe treatment. There is a possibility that your gums can prove sensitive to the chemicals used in teeth whitening, especially if you already have concerns with sensitive teeth. The chemicals may react with your gums but these cases are rare and compared to the longer lasting benefits, the risks are temporary. We advise taking ibuprofen to control any gum irritation.
