Early detection saves lives
Oral cancer screening is a short procedure that involves a thorough examination of your whole mouth to check for any lumps or lesions that you might have. This will highlight any risk factors so we can refer you as quickly as possible, if needed.
Screening And Self-Examination
It is recommended that you come in for a screening at least once a year. Self-examination is a simple, potentially life-saving process.
Look out for:
– Ulcers which do not heal within three weeks
– Red and white patches in the mouth
– Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth
If you notice any of these signs, please book an appointment as soon as possible so they can be checked.
Preventing Oral Cancer
Lifestyle choices can significantly influence your risk of oral cancer.
Tobacco
Tobacco is the most common cause of mouth cancer. All forms of tobacco increase the risk, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, paan, areca nut and gutkha. The NHS stop smoking service operates out of pharmacies and includes support groups and treatment options, such as nicotine replacement like chewing gum or patches.
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol to excess is linked to around a third of mouth cancers. Drinking increases the mouth’s rate of absorption of tobacco. People who both drink and smoke to excess are at a much higher risk of developing mouth cancer. To keep your risk of alcohol-related harm low, the NHS advises drinking no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days.
Diet
A healthy balanced diet containing the recommended five a day fruit and vegetable portions can help lower mouth cancer risk. Eat green and yellow fresh fruit and vegetables every day. Bananas, peppers, broccoli, beans and cabbage are good sources of beta-carotene that can help to prevent other cancers too. Fish and eggs have also been linked to reduced risk.
HPV
The human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be passed on through oral sex, is an increasingly recognised cause of mouth and throat cancers.
Sunblock
To prevent lip cancer, make sure you wear protective sunscreen lotion when the sun is shining.

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers
Don’t see the answer you’re looking for?
Your dentist checks your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, the floor and roof of your mouth and your throat for anything unusual, such as lumps, ulcers or patches. It is usually quick and shouldn’t be painful. Your dentist will explain each step as they go.
We recommend at least once a year. Your dentist will advise how often you should be checked, based on your own circumstances. Between visits, look out for ulcers that haven’t healed within three weeks, red or white patches, and lumps or swellings in your mouth.
Most mouth changes turn out not to be cancer, but anything unusual should be checked. If something needs a closer look, we’ll explain what we’ve seen and refer you promptly for further tests. If you notice a sign yourself, please don’t wait. Book an appointment so it can be checked.
