Periodontal Gum disease Treatment
Gum disease is caused by plaque building up on and between teeth, irritating the gums and making them swollen. If this is not treated, it may lead to destruction of the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw. As the disease gets worse the teeth can become loose, and eventually fall out.
Gum disease often progresses painlessly, so you do not notice the damage it is doing. Regular dental hygiene appointments can help prevent gum disease. However, if you’ve left it a bit longer, your gums may bleed when you are brushing or eating, and your breath may also become unpleasant.
Prolonged Gum Treatment involves:
- Careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove tartar and plaque deposits from deep periodontal pockets, under local anaesthetic.
- The root surfaces are smoothened to remove bacterial toxins, and irrigated with antimicrobials.
- Dentomycin, an antibiotic gel (which is active against the bacteria causing gum disease), is applied directly into the pockets where bacteria are growing.
This treatment reduces the depth of treated pockets, which results in an improvement in gum health.

A periodontist specialises in preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease. They focus on the health of the gums and supporting bone around the teeth, and also place and maintain dental implants.
Periodontitis cannot be completely cured, but it can be successfully managed and stabilised with professional treatment and good home care. Early treatment greatly improves long-term outcomes.
Common signs include bleeding gums, swollen or red gums, persistent bad breath, and gums pulling away from the teeth. Loose teeth can occur in more advanced stages.
Not necessarily. With early diagnosis and the right treatment, periodontal disease can often be controlled and tooth loss prevented. The sooner it’s treated, the better the outcome.
Because periodontitis is a long-term condition, it doesn’t “go away” on its own. With treatment, inflammation can improve within weeks, but ongoing maintenance and regular care are essential to keep it under control.
