Gum disease is caused by plaque building up on and between teeth, irritating the gums and making them swollen. If this is not treated, it may lead to destruction of the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw. As the disease gets worse the teeth can become loose, and eventually fall out.

Gum disease often progresses painlessly, so you do not notice the damage it is doing. Regular dental hygiene appointments can help prevent gum disease. However, if you’ve left it a bit longer, your gums may bleed when you are brushing or eating, and your breath may also become unpleasant.
